March 2, 2009

Author Jill McCorkle, known for her humorous and perceptive portrayals of Southern women and their relationships, will read from her work Monday, March 2, at 8 p.m. in Molnar Recital Hall in Wygal. McCorkle is the author of five novels and three collections of short stories. She made publishing history at age 26 by having her first two novels, The Cheer Leader and July 7th, published simultaneously. Five of her books have been selected by the New York Times Book Review for its Notable Books of the Year list. She received Longwood’s 20th John Dos Passos Prize for Literature in 2000. McCorkle, said the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “has a deft comic touch and is a keen observer of Southern manners, in all their complexity and frequent absurdity.” Her other novels are Tending to Virginia, Carolina Moon, and Ferris Beach. Her story collections are Crash Diet, Final Vinyl Days And Other Stories, and Creatures of Habit. McCorkle, a native of Lumberton, N.C., is currently the Lee Smith Visiting Professor in Creative Writing at North Carolina State University.
