The annual Relay for Life hosted by Longwood University will be held on Stubbs lawn April 3-4
April 3, 2009 - April 4, 2009
The annual Relay for Life hosted by Longwood University, an American Cancer Society event that supports research and education, honors survivors and remembers those lost to cancer, will be held on Stubbs Lawn on April 3-4 beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, April 3. This year's focus is lymphoma, the most common blood cancer and the third most common cancer diagnosed in children (more than 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lymphoma this year). The theme this year is "Fight Back, Go Green!" for three reasons: it ties into Longwood's two-year sustainability theme, green signifies this type of cancer; and this year's class color is green. The evening includes the lighting of luminaria in honor or memory of a loved one, as well as a Survivors' Reception, Survivors' Lap, and Care-Givers' Lap. The event is coordinated by the Relay Student Committee, chaired by student Kristyn Smith, for which the faculty adviser is Dr. Maureen Walls-McKay, assistant director of the Counseling Center.
