The Office of Environmental, Occupational Health, Safety, and Emergency Management is a multi-faceted office serving the needs of the entire campus community. Managed by staff trained in a variety of emergency preparedness fields, we provide on site advising for all departments and offices at Longwood University.

    Electrical Safety

    Electrical hazards can cause burns, shocks and electrocution (death).

    Safety Tips
    Assume that all overhead wires are energized at lethal voltages. Never assume that a wire is safe touch even if it is down or appears to be insulated. Never touch a fallen overhead power line. Call the electric utility company to report fallen electrical lines. Read more

    The EHS&EM Safety Committee has created a quarterly newsletter to provide staff, faculty, and students with regulatory updates, office updates, and various information that will help you to be safe in your place of work.  Read more

    Safety Recognition Program

    In order to recognize employees for working safely, promoting safety and for encouraging safe work practices, Longwood University's EHS&EM Safety Committee has created the Safety Award Program. This program is meant to positively reinforce the benefits of working safely through a proactive approach of recognition, evaluation and control of unsafe work practices and hazardous conditions.   • 2010 VA Hurricane Evacuation Guide

    The Hurricane Evacuation Guide is available at Farm Fresh and Kroger supermarkets, as well as local government offices. The guide also will be given to families participating in events sponsored by Radio Disney, ESPN 94.1 FM and these Max Media radio stations: 92.9 FM The Wave, Eagle 97 FM and Hot 100.5 FM.

    As part of the Ready Virginia public-outreach campaign, Virginia's Hurricane Evacuation Guide contains important information on:


    • Several evacuation routes and traffic reversal plans for Interstate 64
    • The effects of storm surge on coastal areas
    • Bridge, tunnel and ferry closure plans
    • Hurricane watches and warnings
    • Personal emergency preparedness and making a family emergency plan

    No matter what summertime activity you choose to participate in - some fun and games with family or friends at the park, a refreshing swim, or a backyard barbecue - those hot and humid days can take a toll on you physically, as well as present some hidden dangers.  These recreation and off-duty activities certainly matter, but what about the effects this time of year on the work force? Too many times, the only thing you hear about is the black-flag conditions commands advertise when the heat and humidity become extreme.
